Hello wastedpixels,
There is no difference between the way the Mac and Windows versions of hackety-hack handles the Shoes and ruby code, so you can indeed take other people's programs and use them in whatever version you like.
The problem you have sounds a little strange - is the program only showing some code if you paste it in, or something else?
If you want to check if it's copy/paste or something else, please open hackety-hack, and a browser open to someone else's program and simply type in the code to HH and try saving then running that. Then open a new editor window and try copy/paste from the browser.
Please let us know what you find.
Thanks

Also - I was just trying out some things on the Windows to see what I could see.
The 'paste' comment might also be alt+v, not the normal ctrl+v (Win). Otherwise you might get something like a lego block.
Something I noticed with the window size - try expanding the HH window to full screen (or whatever Mac allows). HH does hide some longer lines of code when the tutorials are shown, and puts an ellipsis (...) at the end of the line to indicate more to be seen.
If still nothing, please let us know.
Cheers
